Product Info:

Uncommon, but extremely charming repertoire in a great performance: on the youngest CD of fortepianist Tini Mathot together with soprano Bettina Pahn one can experience works from the 2nd Berliner Liederschule. A repertory that asks for a rather sophisticated interpretation and a lot of expressivity from both musicians, because most of the songs are written in strophic form and - seemingly - quite simple: the art of a light-hearted, but elaborated sound. Under the title Es war ein König in Thule there are songs by composers like Zelter, Reichardt or Rust, but also solo works for fortepiano by C.P.E. Bach on this CD. More

Information:
Ton Koopman is not only one of the great fathers of the Baroque-Renaissance revival in the 1970's, but a true pioneer of our time. Koopman's endless curiosity in music and performance research has this time turned his attention to a world premiere recording of Buxtehude's complete works. Dieterich Buxtehude is considered by many to be the most important figure in German Baroque music, after Johann Sebastian Bach. In a world-first, Koopman has recorded Buxtehude's Opera Omnia including Vocal Works, Organ Works, Chamber Music. This boxset collection is an incredible achievement in the Baroque discography, a milestone which will remain a reference for many years to come.

Bettina Pahn was born in Erfurt. She first studied cello and later focused on singing at the Hanns Eisler Music University in Berlin and with Professor Elsa Cavelti in Frankfurt. Since June 2012, Bettina Pahn works together with the renowned Dutch singing teacher Margreet Honig. Her moving lyric soprano voice quickly excited the interest of diverse conductors in the areas of Oratorium, early music and lieder.

The German Soprano cooperates intensively with Ton Koopman in recordings and concerts. Together with him, she performs in the most important concert halls (the Carnegie Hall in New York and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam...) and also in numerous of international festivals (the Göttingen Handel Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival). She has recorded four albums of a set of CDs with Ton Koopman dedicated to the work Dieterich Buxtehude. The second album "Opera Omnia VII - Volume 3" received the German Echo Classic Award 2009. Press Reviews

Isabel Schubert, Bachtrack - 10.2017

Kloster Klang Festival 2017 | Loccum (DE) - 7.10.2017

German Eröffnungskonzert mit Joachim Held, Laute und Wolf Böwig, Kriegsberichtserstatter.
"Baustelle Freiheit.

English Opening Concert 27.07.2017
"...It was a massive treat to hear the tragi-comic Canary Cantata, or "Funeral Music for an artistically-trained canary bird." Some readers may know Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s recording of this with an instrumental group that includes Lothar Koch on oboe. Here in France, florid harpsichord playing, the superbly clear soprano of Bettina Pahn (even heard from behind she sounded special) and full involvement from all meant that the full "drama" was caught..."

English Final Concert 30.07.2017
"...Koopman steered the performance of Donnerode expertly. The choir sounded fabulous in the opening chorus, "Wie ist dein Name so groß," although given the soupy acoustic, words blurred. But delight upon delight followed: Bettina Pahn, not seen since the first night, was superb against a wonderful bassoon obbligato in the aria, “Bringt her, ihr Helden aus göttlichem Samen”; similarly, the soprano aria "Schönster von allen Geschlechten," with its gently swaying pair of obbligato flutes, was a joy, this time acting as balm after the bass arias..."
